Before we plant anything, it’s important to prepare the space. The right space matters to make walking accessible, ensure proper drainage, keep weeds in control, and remove any potential hazards like sharp objects or broken glass.
While working on the garden in the picture, we had a lot of weeds and uncontrolled bamboo. We tried to remove all the bamboo by hand. Then we wanted to make sure it doesn’t grow back. So we went with a plan to put mulch everywhere. This helps suppress weeds, keeps the moisture in, and makes sure the place is leveled and neat-looking.
We also laid down cardboard in some areas before adding mulch, which acts as a biodegradable weed barrier. This process took a lot of work. Next step was building raised beds, this makes planting easier and helps improve drainage too. You can also control the soil better in raised beds.
